It only took me 10 years, but I finally get it!

Sure I've read each and every Harry Potter book and sat through each movie in the theater and on DVD. But today I finally caught on to the tiniest bit of clever word play. Ten years later!

Diagon Alley.

Diagonally.

(Thanks Russell!)
HaHaHaHaHa.

I'm sorry but my blog muse is on vacation and small things amuse small minds.

So are you as excited as I am for July 31? I will admit to being a fan and will probably stay up all night just to read it in one day. It's just a crazy little thing I have to do now and then when I'm in a mood. (Besides that, it really impresses small children.)

Which is why I have not been able to put down this:

"Have you ever been to the Déjà Vue before?" asked Madeleine...

Jack: "I don't think so, but it does look sort of familiar."

And one more reason to look forward to July 2007: the next Thursday Next novel. How I love to get myself lost in a good book!

What about you:

Harry Potter Y/N?

What's on your nightstand?

What's on my nightstand? A pile of snotty Kleenex, that's what. We sing Blondies 'The Tide Is High' around here as 'The Pollen Counts High.'

Harry Potter? Meh. We're more into A Series Of Unfortunate Events.

Delicious!

Lemony Snicket. Not the pollen count.

Two words:

Allergy shots

Saved my life. Quite literally.

I'm actually reading "Treasure Island". The written language of the book is better than the movie [which is usually par for Hollywood]

HP-yes...In spite of the JP's opinions.

Harry Potter, yes, yes, yes! I not only stay up all night to read the next one (purchased at midnight), but I read all the previous ones in the 2 weeks leading up to the next release. I'm SO excited.

I'm in between books right now....read "To Kill a Mockingbird" last, but i'm looking for something inspiring...what are the Thursday novels?

Me so excited for Harry P.

Right now I've been reading a book called "Complications." It's written by a doctor and basically all of his scary doctor stories are in it. Not so great for a hypochondriac like myself, probably.

i just finished reading marie antoinette by antonia fraser. and i rented the movie yesterday at blockbuster. actually hoping to watch it before sunday. i have way too many books that i want to read. not a huge fan of harry potter. i like things that could really happen, not big into the magic/witch world stuff. but i've never tried to read them, so maybe i will when my kids get a little older...

You all are so literary and Meta you are brave!

Welcome terina! I should read that. I hear the soundtrack is fabulous.

cabesh--Thursday Next are a series a novels by Jasper Fforde. If you aren't opposed to fantasy and you enjoy literary allusion and puns I recommend them as highly entertaining. They are a bit silly on the surface, but quite witty and not afraid to take a good poke at things/people/governments/businesses etc. that take themselves too seriously. Just a tad bit of language in a couple of them, but mostly a good and well-written diversion.

This is me said...

Harry Potter--no thank you (sorry)

On my nightstand--I just finished reading Gift From the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Highly recommended. And, I'm reading one of the Angelina Ballerina books to my daughter.

No apologies necessary. There's a great french saying that loses something in translation, but the essence of it is everything has his or her own thing. Words to live by.

Jack Spratt Investigations - that looks like fun!

We love HP and were just discussing whether or not to go to the Borders midnight party.

I am reading Charms for the Easy Life.

Kaye Gibbons is one of my favorites. I need to go dust that one off and read it again. Thanks for the reminder!

A resounding "Yes!" to HP. I wouldn't miss it--in fact, Goblet of Fire is being watched by the kids right now. They're going to wear out our DVDs.

At the moment I'm reading 2 Peter Mayle books...of course lol

You know how I LOVE Peter Mayle. I lent out A Year In Provence and I'm devastated because whoever borrowed it failed to return it. I'm going to have to shop Amazon to see if he has anything knew. His books are good enough to eat.

...thank you for explaining diagon alley... for me. Wow... I'm slow. I love HP... my hubby and I listen to Jim Dale, who does the BEST audio books ever for HP.

I love Thursday Next... but have yet to read the other books in the series...because of you I'm off to the bookstore. I actually bought the Eyre Affair more than 6 years ago on cd... and LOVED it.

Right now...my nightstand (aka bathroom counter) is the Ensign...conf made me buck up and focus again. ;-)

Good for you!

My husband's birthday is on April Fool's Day, so he gives us all presents back on his birthday just for fun. He gave me "I am a Mother." So that's now what's on top of the stack of books on my nightstand.

I read all the HP books 2 Christmases ago over the Xmas break. I was literally dreaming HP for awhile after that.
At our house books being read are: On the Banks of Plum Creek; Lemony Snicket (so far W has done 1, 2, and 8--today we picked up 4 and 7); and I'm still trying to finish up Reading Lolita in Tehran. After that I have two books by Orhan Pamuk I still haven't started.
I wonder if there are online book clubs. It seems like we all regularly do posts about books. I love getting other reading options, for example your Thursday Next series. Thanks!

My sister read "Twilight" and said if you love Harry Potter, you will not be able to put this book down. My 12 and 10 year olds read it in a few days and it's like 500 pages.
On my nightstand? A bottle of tums, and a bottle of Jergens lotion. My books are on the floor.

Yes to Harry Potter!

Currently reading "The Power of Three" by Dianna Wynne Jones (juvenile fantasy)

The Eyre Affair is on my cue. I think I will really like Jasper Fforde--it was a popular read with my book club, but I missed that month.

Unlike the rest of the free world- I haven't read a single Harry Potter book. David has them all, just no interest here. I suffered through the first movie, but that is it.

As for the nightstand- Currently I am reading Chicken Soup for the Military Wife's Soul and Honeymoon by James Patterson.

What a great way to celebrate a birthday... your hubby's style. That book is the next one I want to read... just need to go get it from the bookstore.

I tried to read a Harry Potter book (the first) and couldn't get interested in it. Also trying to read "A Prayer for Owen Meany", hope it gets interesting soon. It was recommended by so many.

What I want to read is "The Runes of the Earth" by Stephen R. Donaldson. My husband and I devoured all six (I thought there were 8)volumes of "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" more than 20 years ago. If you liked the Lord of the Rings books you'll be love these.

HP - Yeah! And for those of you who are addicts, don't forget to find some HP-fanfic that is excellent: Paradigm of Uncertainty. You can find it online. Fantastic (and there are two additional books!)

As many of you know, I just finished "Eat, Pray, Love" and it goes down as one of the best books I've read in 10 years.

I just got "Ancestors of Avalon" a prequel to Mists of Avalon. Will start that this week.

Hey there! I found you through Suzie Petunia & Melody's Garden...
I have also enjoyed John Knowles books...right now Elizabeth Bishop< Ted Kooser, Mary Karr & Donald Hall (their collections of poetry, not them actually...:) are on my nightstand. It usually adds and adds until my measly, tiny excuse for a nightstand about falls over and then I clean out and start over with some new material.

Love HP! Totally can't wait for July! When I taught 4th grade HP was my theme for my class- basically it rocked!
Now on my nightstand is a lamp and if I can turn it off and go to sleep then we're doing good. Miss reading!

I am getting W all of the autographed Next books for his birthday. Shh.
They make us unbelieveably happy.

And Yes to Harry Potter.

And I am currently reading America and Americans by John Steinbeck. It is a collection of his essays--it makes me want to become a writer. I love it.

La Yen--you are the best! He will love it! (I have two autographed. And, if I can ever find where I stashed it, I have the lighthouse postcard. I completely adore JF.
